Operation Cleanup Chenarus

This is a campaign that I have written that is now underway.  The first mission was on the co-op 26 map Crystal Breach which I moved to Chenarus and reset the mission objectives to the North Western part of the map (and made MSR 4 the Airport as a high value target).  I made the map ACE specific and changed most loadouts and ammo boxes to reflect my units preferred loadouts, as well as those of the Marine unit we had joining us.

--------------------------------

BACKSTORY

The Russian Federation moved into Chenarus six months ago at the request of a milita Junta that had overthrown their democratically elected government that had over extended their finances and created a massive financial crisis in the wake of the world wide 'bubble' bursting.  At first, the Russians were well recieved by the local populance, who saw them as restoring order and protecting their interests, then General Sarkov, the Brigade commander began a secret operation to eliminate the Muslim population of the country.  People began dissappearing and rumors arose that there was ethnic cleansing occuring.

With pressure from the UN the Russian president withdrew the Russian forces from Chenarus.

General Sarkov refused to return to Russia and convinced several parts of his brigade to remain in Chenarus to 'help' the local authorities.  The country entered a blackout period that lasted several weeks until a few young men crossed the boarder into Takistan and reported that atrocities were occuring throughout the country against the Muslim community.  Immediatly the Takistani Army sent a company of mechanized forces into Chenarus to help the local Muslims.  They met heavy resistance from the Russian units in the Northern part of the country and were able to secure several of the Northern most villages.  Then a coup de tait occured in the Takistani Army units; they broke ties with Takistan and joined forces with General Sarkov's units!  It appeared that there was a great deal of religious intolerance on both sides of the fight and the Takistani's (being Shite Muslims) did not necessarily want to protect the local Sunni and Ba'hai Muslims from the Russians.

The UN Security council voted (with Russian voting No and China abstaining) to support the overthrown Chenarus government which was in exile in France, to retake their country and put an end to the eithnic religious fighting.

Due to time constraints and general deployments across the globe, there are insufficient units available to deploy into the country.  Worse, logistics are a huge problem with the islolated nature of the country.  US Army units have been deployed with desert uniforms and colors on their vehicles and only a few LAV 25's (from the USMC) are available as 'heavy platforms'.  Air support can only loiter in the area for a short period of time before having to leave and refuel, but luckily the Russian and Takistani units do not have many fixed wing aircraft available.

The following is the OPORD placed on the 7-75th Ranger website and the 26th MEU webpage.

SITUATION
After months of pleading for aid from the UN, the Security Council has finally agreed to allow direct intervention into the genocidal war in Chenarus.  Due to time constraints we were not able to build up a massive body of men and equipment.  Therefore we only have one company of US Rangers and  some elements from the 26th MEU in the area.  Both  groups were on a combined training mission in Iraq when you were rapidly redeployed to Chenarus.
This means that some of the gear and that of the Marines will be desert issue.
Supply is attempting to reposition supplies for the raid but cannot guarantee its arrival before mission start time.
This mission to key to allow our follow up forces more time to move into the AO.

Enemy Forces
REU7 – Russian Expeditionary Unit 7 – front line Russian forces deployed into the Area of Operations several months ago.  Due to international pressure the Russian Government has removed most of the units from the AO, but General Sarkov (local commander) has refused to return to Russia.  Several Companies of Infantry, 1 of Armor, 2 of aircraft and other units have remained loyal to the General and are refusing to return home.
Infantry Units – Homeland Defence Force 17th and 26th Motorized Infantry Brigades – latest generation Russian weapons and equipment.  Exact numbers unknown.
Mechanized Units -  12 Mechanized Corps – various IFV's and MBT's.  T90's are not known to be in the AO but this is unsubstantiated.
Air Units - 223rd Air Brigade – Hind C, Mi-17 and other helicopters.
Takistani Defence Forces – units from Takistan have moved into the area to assist the Russians, it is unknown what their force composition is.  They may have brought air assets with them.

EXECUTION

Rangers (callsign ROMEO (Alpha and Bravo) will form up a convoy and scout and secure a Main Supply Route (MSR) along the North/South Highway, 26th MEU will assist (callsign DAGGER (Alpha and Bravo).  Capture the Main Airfield near as well as disrupting the OPFOR supply chain.  There are also two known Artillery positions that should be eliminated.  One is a large fortified Mortar site South of the Airfield the other is West of the Airfield.  Both are expected to be heavily defended.

Coordinating Instructions
All units will be using ACRE for communications purposes.  Each Fire Team should have 1 person carrying a backpack radio (AN/PRC 119 or 117F) and acting as a Radio Man for the team.

Phase one went very well with the crb patrol and re-enforcement scripts worked very well.  It actually seemed very organic with us meeting a patrol along MSR1 and then fighting with them and having reenforcements show up as well as a HIND E (Aerial patrol script).  We moved into the first town and met up with light resistance from the OPFOR (I was using the random patrol script in the town with only a few units showing up).  What was nasty was the re-enforcements that went cross country behind our units and then reset the roadblock...which cost us a lot of people when we reformed after dying and moved in convoy back to the 'safe' area we had previously cleared.  It made for an excellent and exciting mission with us only capturing 1 MSR (and it got re-enforced at the end) and taking it only 1/2 way to the the next MSR.

Everyone really enjoyed the mission especially how the OPFOR behaved (we all agreed they seemed to be setting up well for our movements and responding to us).

Serf, I'm really, really

Serf, I'm really, really happy to hear that you've modified my mission and had a great time playing it out.

You can upload the PBO to this page if you wish, so we can all give it a go. I'm assuming the mission is based on Combined Arms?

I'd be happy to upload phase

I'd be happy to upload phase 1.  The mission is ACE dependant.  Everyone who played the mission kept saying how 'real' the AI were.  I use Zeus on our server, but I believe its a combination of the CrB scripts with the Zeus AI enhancements that make the AI's act much more realistically.  A good example was how the OPFOR would attack and then when hit with heavy firepower would retreat and regroup, then try to flank our positions.  Also a lone HIND (air patrol) snuck up to our convoy (low flying over treetops) and did a long range rocket attack on us before coming in on a straffing run!  I actually just hid and watched the helo cause havok and was very impressed with its behaviour.

I'm working on phase 2 right now (picking up where we left off with a few changes).  I am adding Norrin's revive to the maps as it was the one and only complaint that I had from both groups that played (due to the long distances required for returning to combat).

Phase two didn't go as well

Phase two didn't go as well as phase one.  I tried adding Norrins respawn and it seemed to screw the map and AI routines up.  I pulled it at the last moment and just went with the ACE wounding system (with a slower revive).  That seemed to work just fine.  The OPFOR didn't re-enforce anything, and seemed 'dumb'.  Not sure what happened.

Phase Three has moved to Takistan.  General Sarkov and his Takistani cohorts crossed the border behind the US led forces and re-entered Takistan.  During the night they staged a Coup and have taken over the countries Army and Airfoce.  They have also siezed most of the UN and US assets in the Southern part of the country.  Now the US forces will have to fight to recapture their own equipment and bases.  Here's the Fragmentary Order for phase three;

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FRAGO - OPERATION CLEANUP CHENARUS PHASE THREE

Location; Takistan (Southern regions)

Time; 0800 Local Time, weather overcast

Situation; General Sarkov and his commanders did an end-around manuever and bypassed the US forces in Chenarus.  By taking the Eastern border crossings they were able to move under cover of darkness into Takistan, where they were met with open arms by the Takistani Army which had staged a coup d'etat, overthrowing their government and putting several of the local military commanders in charge of the country.  They have executed several members of their parliment but were unable to capture their President who was hidden by local insurgents.

Now the country is under a full miltary regime and making threats against nearby India and Pakistan that they will launch chemical or biological weapons against those countries if UN and US forces are not immediatly removed from their country.  This includes non-military personal including oil company workers.  The UN Security council is going to have a formal emergency meeting at 13:00 HRS (local time) to decide a direction of response.

In the intern the US strike force that was sent into Chenarus has quietly moved into Takistan and set up an FOB.

Mission; Recapture former US airfield near Southern border area.  Regain control of nearby towns and stage reconisance into other villages.  There is also fear of reprisals against non-Takistani civilians by the Takistani Army and Militia.  Secure a perimeter around the airport and nearby villages.

Tasking; 7th Rangers, 26MEU and 7CMBG are to form up at FOB Owl and stage a fast assualt on the Airport located nearby.  Protection of US/UN gear is of major importance as thier destruction will slow further mission developments.  Civilian company representatives, aid personal and other civilians (tourists) are to be found and returned to the main airfield for protection and repatriation as soon as possible.  After the main runway has been captured it must be protected from Russian and Takistani counterattack.  Ranger teams will then move out on long recon missions assisted by the 26MEU and 7CMBG units.  Possible areas of interest must be searched and cleared as well as possible SCUD type launcher systems found and neutralized before they can be used against neutral nearby countries.

-------------------------------------------

So here's my problem; how do I get civilians to be 'captured' by friendly forces?  I want to be able to get them to load onto and off of vehicles (trucks) and moved to the airfield once it has been captured.

Thats a hard one to answer.

Thats a hard one to answer. You'd almost have to have them in a trigger and use thisList or go through allUnits, find who is a civilian and get them in a vehicle.

Not an easy task.

I figured as much.  I'll just

I figured as much.  I'll just tell the players that when they find a civilian to 'mark them' on the map and we'll bring up a transport for them later.  I noticed in the UPSmon AI scripts that they have surrendering options, and it got me thinking that maybe I could make the civilians 'surrender' all the time.  That way players could capture them and maybe escort them to a transport vehicle.  I think I'll look into those scripts a bit more.

I'll clean up my missions

I'll clean up my missions once our groups have finished running through them and upload them as a co-op campaign.   I've learned a lot with the campaign so far and my players have been really positive about the feeling of the mission; meaning the way the AI are reacting to things like our attacks and scouting.  They also really enjoy coming across patrols and the like when travelling in convoy to various objectives.

I've added the UPSmon scripts to the latest phase of the campaign, and one of my older missions and ran a test last night of my Scud hunt mission which is based upon Boers Plain.  We all noticed that the AI seemed much more aggressive during our approaches to towns and that they were moving in and out of buildings quicker than before.  I placed a bunch of static weapons and some empty vehicles around one of the towns and a squad of TK Army on 'defend' (using UPSmon) I also had a couple of groups of crB spawned TK Militia on defend and patrol near the town as well as a Motorized patrol covering the area.

Well..it seems that some of the scirpting for the AI 'command' routines from UPSmon carry over to the crB guys!  I spotted Militia in vehicles manning the weapons as well as on some of the static weapons (and they weren't set on them) as well as moving in concert with the Army units to defend the town.  The militia fought 'straight up' attacking my two fireteams while the Army unit laid down a lot of random suppression fire as part of the squad went out on our right flank.  Needless to say it was an excellent battle and my teams really enjoyed it, especially when we realized that the Taki's were supporting each others movements.

Some of the guys noticed a bit more lag than usual though I didn't notice anything.  I also noticed that some of the AI's from both scripts were 'stupid'; meaning they stopped moving or moved to a position and just stood there (often in buildings) this usually happened after we'd laid down a lot of fire on them and they had retreated.  We were saying they were suffering from PTSD, but I think when the leader of the UPSmon squad was killed they lost their commander and therefore had no one to command them for a period of time.  I'm going to run some more tests on both scripts as I make my next phase of the campaign.  I'm especially interested in the 'Ambush' scripts for UPSmon, the OPFOR lay down mines and then 'hide' and wait to ambush vehicles.  I'm going to see if I can set those up with more 'randomness'. They also have an AI artillery script which should be interesting to see in action.

The taskDefend script will

The taskDefend script will man static weapons if they are available, so bear that in mind.

Sounds like a great set of missions - will be good to see them published. Feel free to publish on BI Forums or the like and just mention the original missions in the credits. I think there will be a lot of people who will enjoy playing them.
